How to get your dog to eat kibble. 7 tricks.

“My dog doesn’t want to eat his kibble, only homemade food.”

This phrase is said to me every day by dog owners. You know very well that I disagree that your dog should eat kibble and nothing but kibble. That is not a healthy or complete diet, besides being cruel, no matter how good they are.

Please! If you love your dog don’t just give him kibble and nothing more than that. I’m asking you on my knees.

However, I always recommend that dogs eat them as a supplement. Of course, commercial quality dog food. I am going to give you some tricks to make them eat them.

I am often asked: what can I mix my dog’s food with? If I do, will I unbalance his diet?

You have to get that idea out of your head that “You are going to unbalance his diet if you add something else and do not give him only kibble”. What you should not do is to mix them in equal parts with natural foods, because the digestion times are very different, the kibbles remain a long time in the stomach while natural foods leave the stomach much faster. Use these foods in a proportion of 5 to 10% of the total ration.

Trick 1 YORK HAM

How do I get my dog to eat kibble? York ham is a good source of animal protein. Try to make it without salt, the dog does not need it in its diet, its organism always got it (for thousands of years) through the muscles of the prey it hunted (rich in sodium). Buy (for you and your dog) with a minimum of 90% meat, with less than this amount they are rich in starch, not good for your health or your dog’s health. Feeding your dog based on feed or kibble is cruel, if you love him you will only give them as a complement and nothing else.

Trick 2 YOGURT

How do I get my dog to eat kibble? Well I can assure you that they love yogurt, most dogs like yogurt, almost always natural, buy flavored and natural and try it, excellent source of protein, calcium and fat for your dog.

People think they will get diarrhea because they associate it with milk. The problem with milk (not that it is bad for them) is that it has lactose (the milk sugar) and if the dog has stopped consuming milk a long time ago it no longer generates lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose) and then we cause diarrhea. Yogurt has no lactose because it has been consumed by lactobacilli. Feeding your dog based on feed or kibble is cruel, if you love him you will only give them as a complement and nothing else.

Trick 3 Cheese

What can I mix my dog’s food with? I know that in the previous point I said that the problem with dairy products is the lactose that can cause diarrhea, I agree, but if you are only going to put a little bit you will not have problems, if you are afraid that your dog is very sensitive to lactose, you can buy lactose-free cheese.

Cheese is a very high quality food for a dog because it is a rich source of protein and fat, and also calcium, if you do not abuse it you will not have problems of diarrhea with your dog, and 99% of probabilities that he likes it. Feeding your dog based on feed or kibble is cruel, if you love him you will only give it as a complement and nothing else.

Trick 4. Pasta

“My dog doesn’t want to eat kibble, only homemade food” Of course! What do you expect? Dogs do NOT eat kibble or feed, they are just a supplement, let’s be clear. I know that they are essentially carbohydrates. If you cook pasta for your dog exclusively, i.e. hot water and pasta, forget it, he’s not going to eat it. However, if you make delicious pasta for you, some spaghetti, some macaroni with tomato and tuna … for example, it is very likely that he will eat it.

I know you are thinking: “but I put onion and tomato in my pasta? Aren’t these foods toxic for my dog? Not so, I recommend you to read The falsehoods about toxic foods for your dog. Feeding your dog based on feed or kibble is cruel, if you love him you will only give them as a complement and nothing else.

Trick 5. Tuna

What can I mix my dog’s food with? Two things should be clear to you: it is not good to “mix” and what you say “my dog’s food” (kibble or feed) is not so. It is not good to mix, it is better to alternate, that is to say, if you are going to mix natural food with dry balls, try to make it 90% natural food and 10% kibble, or the other way around, 90% feed and 10% natural food. One thing is to mix and another to alternate, mixing is what I have just explained; alternating is to give in one occasion natural food and in another occasion kibble, trying to give 90% of the time natural food.

Tuna is very practical because it comes in small cans that you can administer in 1-2-3 shots depending on the size of your dog. I am always asked if it should be in water or with oil, in general I highly recommend it with oil, unless you have a dog with serious liver problems (then you should not even give tuna -animal protein-).

I also know you will tell me what about the levels of mercury and other contaminants in tuna and other fish? You should know that EVERYTHING we are currently consuming is contaminated. It is a reflection of consumerism devoid of ethics and any principle of sustainability and respect for the environment. Do you want to avoid contaminated products? Buy certified organic products if you can afford it, for you and your family. Feeding your dog based on feed or kibble is cruel, if you love him you will only give them as a complement and nothing else.

Trick 6. Butter

How do I get my dog to eat kibble? Well, you should know that they love butter in general, and who doesn’t? Animal fats in humans should be much more controlled than in carnivores, including dogs. It is much easier for us to raise our cholesterol with the intake of animal fats; dogs, and carnivores in general, do not have these cholesterol problems by ingesting fats. This is due to their feeding nature, they are made to eat animals, rich in protein and fat.

Butter or margarine? This is a very common mistake, confusing butter with margarine, the first is of animal origin and the second of vegetable origin. The inclusion of this type of fat is very important for their overall health, for a shiny coat, and if you have a dog with colitis problems, its inclusion is essential: Butter in dogs with colitis. Feeding your dog based on feed or kibble is cruel, if you love him you will only give them as a complement and nothing else.

Trick 7. Bacon

Whenever we think of bacon, bacon and other high fat foods we think of cholesterol, saturated fats, that they will occlude our veins… I get it, but that is in us humans; in dogs it is not like that in general terms, if there is no abuse and it is done with knowledge, that’s what you are here for.

Saturated fats. They are almost always of animal origin. At room temperature they solidify. The perfect example is when you fry bacon, a while later the frying pan has a waxy layer, it is the solidified fat. Something like this happens in our arteries if we consume in excess. In dogs this problem does not occur, however we should not abuse them.

Like butter, they are excellent animal fats for our dogs or cats, without the slightest doubt, you may be wondering what about salt? First, invest in a quality bacon, if you give it occasionally there is no problem, I recommend you to read about salt in the dog’s diet. You can even fry the bacon a little, chop it up and mix it with those pellets. Feeding your dog based on feed or kibble is cruel, if you love him you will only give them as a complement and nothing else.
