About vitamins for dogs and vitamins for puppies, I am always asked the same question: which vitamins are the best for my dog or puppy?
You should know that there are homemade vitamins for dogs, that is, you can make them yourself, without going any further, liver as a SUPPLEMENT, is an excellent source of vitamins, more about it below.
I want to highlight some points that are important regarding vitamins for specific cases.
Vitamins for adult dogs
I think you already know, if you have read the blog a little, that feeding a dog with dry balls that do not spoil, that is, the famous feed or kibble, is not healthy at all, besides it is cruel. Imagine eating dry pellets day and night.
So, the first step, before thinking about vitamins, is…. FEED YOUR DOG WITH FRESH AND NATURAL FOOD, if you do this in the right way (learn first, it is not difficult, you have the blog to do it for free, or with our books and online course for payment), I can assure you that YOU WILL NOT NEED VITAMINS. Why? Because you will be giving them through the food, if you include some fruit, vegetables, animal protein (liver OCCASIONALLY -never daily-) you will be giving the vitamins that your dog requires, it is as simple as that.
If you are giving your dog real quality nutrition, that is, fresh and balanced food through a BALANCED diet, you won’t need to give vitamins, plain and simple.
Vitamins for malnourished dogs
This is a very different case from the previous one, here it may be necessary, almost obligatory, to include vitamins for this patient. Let’s go by parts.
Natural food. As in the previous point, it is essential to give natural food, a balanced and rich diet that will have a good supply of vitamins.
Healthy or sick dog? We must know if this dog is healthy or sick. If it is a healthy dog that is simply malnourished, I would recommend that you feed as a healthy dog and perhaps a vitamin B complex would be good.
If it is a sick dog, things get more complicated. Why? Because depending on the disease is the type of vitamins to offer, for example, in a severe renal patient, vitamin B should be avoided.
But, above and beyond vitamins for the sick dog, what do you think it is? NUTRITION (in addition to the medical therapy required by that patient).
In general terms, you should know that Vitamin B Complex is an appetite stimulant and a “BOOSTER” that is, a “power booster”. When you are off, you feel weak, listless…. Generally speaking, vitamin B complexes come in handy in these cases, also for your dog.
Vitamins for fatty dogs
We have many overweight patients. Do you know what is the characteristic of all of them? That they are fed with feed or kibble.
When these patients are submitted to our counseling, we ALWAYS use fresh food and VITAMINS, vitamin B complex is key in this type of patients. If the dog is healthy and only overweight, with our counseling that includes B complex vitamins, we can assure that we have a success rate of over 95%.
Liver as a vitamin
In case you don’t know, liver (I recommend chicken liver, boiled for at least 4-5 minutes) is a great treat for dogs! homemade dog treats
Do you think a dog is stupid and will eat what it doesn’t like? Do you think if it had a choice, it would choose pellets? Liver is a delicacy.
Dogs like liver, you can give it to them as a complement to their pellets, so don’t let them scare you by saying that you are going to unbalance their diet!
Simply follow the following rule: liver is not a food, IT IS A SUPPLEMENT to a good diet; if it is homemade, so much the better.
Liver is not a food IT IS A SUPPLEMENT. You can give it in a meal, but it should not be an exclusive food.
Never give liver as the only food! You can give it in a meal, but it should not be an exclusive food, remember that the key is in the variety.
Dogs with liver disease should not eat liver because it is high in copper, for them there are diets for dogs with liver disease.

Why not give it as a sole food?
As I said, you can do it for a few days and nothing will happen, but if you do it as a single food I remind you that it is high in phosphorus and low in calcium, in a few months your dog’s bones will be deformed if you do not give him a source of calcium as the same bones or dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, etcetera.
How to give it to him?
Well, the more raw, the better, but experience has taught me that a light cooking is more beneficial: less rejection, much more digestibility, not as many nutritional properties are lost as it is believed, very little percentage of rejection (many dogs do not like raw food), you reduce the chances of infections…
Here you can also make a very interesting mix to make him eat his pellets. I recommend you my article “The 7 tricks to make your dog eat his pellets”.
Excellent opportunity to mix it with fruits or vegetables
I remind you that your dog is a carnivore, but that doesn’t mean he won’t eat some vegetables.
And if your dog has not been used to eating fruits and vegetables since he was a puppy, maybe he doesn’t like them now. Well, here you have an excellent opportunity to mix liver with vegetables.
How much of each item should be mixed?
Do you know how many milligrams of calcium you consume per day? When you feed chicken, how many grams do you consume? You don’t know! Well, over time, if you learn how to prepare your dog’s food, you’ll see that it’s best to do as you do with your food: “eyeball by eyeball”.
To start I recommend that you mix 2 to 3 parts of liver to one part of vegetables and/or fruit. You put them in a blender, mixer, food processor… whatever you have and blend them together. They love this mixture.
What fruits and vegetables do I use?
The more variety the better, remember that there is no complete food that contains all the nutrients your dog needs. The key is VARIETY, so that you are consuming all types of nutrients.
A video about Fruits and vegetables for dogs
My favorite fruits
These are the fruits that I use the most:
Apple
Pear
Peach
These are the vegetables that I use the most (almost always canned):
Spinach (very good for intestinal health)
Green beans (in Mexico they are called ejotes)
Canned artichokes
Canned mixed vegetables
Canned zucchini
Carrot
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Boil the vegetables
The only animal that cooks its own food is the human being.
You can choose to cook or not their food, what is best? In short, raw (but there are some very valid and sometimes necessary exceptions, you will get to know them).
With vegetables there is an exception. I remind you that in nature wild dogs, wolves, lions and carnivores in general eat vegetables and other vegetable matter partially digested (“cooked” so to speak), I explain it to you, when they kill a prey, who has access to the intestines are the leaders, this vegetable matter in the intestine takes there from hours to days fermenting, therefore, it is partially digested.
If you give them raw vegetables, you will see them the next day in the excrement. I almost always buy them canned.
My advice
- Use chicken liver, easier to handle, easier to boil, with less hormonal “contamination”.
- If you use livers from small ruminants such as sheep, beware of hydatid cysts, a type of parasite, avoid it, better the chicken.
- Boil the liver, 3 minutes.
- No problem if you use canned vegetables.
- Boil the vegetables for a few minutes
- Use ripe fruits, with peel (as many as possible).
- Liver is a SUPPLEMENT to healthy nutrition, NEVER FOOD TO GIVE DAILY.
- Healthy nutrition should include meaty bones. And pellets as a SUPPLEMENT
- Do not give it as a sole food, it is a supplement very rich in vitamins and minerals.
